Earth Charter Initiative Germany

The Ecumenical One World Initiative (EOWI) coordinates all Earth Charter related activities in Germany. The EOWI links activists and interested people within Germany as well as with other parts of the world. The EOWI also develops new projects and facilitates the networking with other German Earth Charter organisations and activists.

In Germany, various NGOs, Agenda21-Initiatives, schools, churches, companies, individuals or cities like Heidelberg, Munich  and Warburg have already signed the Earth Charter. As part of the United Nations Decade on Education for Sustainable Development many teachers and schools apply the Earth Charter as part of their curriculum.

The Ecumenical One World Initiative

The Ecumenical One World Initiative (EOWI) was established in the mid 1970s, during a time when a new awareness of ecology and development arose. Since then, the aim has been to to facilitate a movement towards a sustainable lifestyle. In accordance with its own principles, the EOWI is part of the One World with its wonderful diversity of flora and fauna, and of a humankind with all peoples, cultures, and religions. These two aspects are combined in the original Greek word oikoumene.

With its work, the EOWI advocates a sustainable lifestyle. In practice, this means a lifestyle based on

  • the willingness for dialogue

  • solidarity

  • simplicity

  • respect and environmental care.
